UC San Francisco의 부교수로 재직 중인
Jill Helms (DDS, PhD, 치과의사이자 이학박사)라는
여류 과학자의 라디오 인터뷰 내용입니다.
그 내용이 금주의 Science Magazine에 The Current Issue of the Science

Simon:
She did the work on birds because it's as she indicated on the radio
interview -- it's a repeat of a classic experiment that only now can be
re-studied with modern tools of molecular biology. Also, she is a
dentist with a grant from the Nat Inst of Dental and Craniofacial Res,
which is quite interested in how faces form and how facial defects (like
cleft palate etc.) can be treated. The answer to your question is
basically that the neural crest cells are also very important in human
facial skeletal development. I guess in a sense the bird beak is
something like the jaw. It's not a coincidence that she is studying birds.
On your other questions, I think at least the dinosaur type birds had
teeth, but I don't know about current birds. Maybe big birds like eagles
and hawks have teeth. I'm not sure. I think the developmental biology
folks study animals like fruit flies and worms and bird embryos etc.
etc. because they are good model systems for key genetic issues. It's
amazing that many of the same genes that control pattern development in
these simple animals are essentially the same as what's found in humans.
All of the stuff that Jill is interested in with regard to patterning of
the skeletoncomes out of similar investigations into patterning in
animals such as fruit flies etc. They are interested in why animals end
up having the shapes and sizes that they do. You should go get a
developmental biology book to browse thru.

you can see the other images I guess.
