3일에 한번 충전이라...제 생각에는 엄청 귀찮겠군여. 물론 핸드폰이랑 같이 갖고 다닌다면 모르겠지만 말입니다. 방수는 당연 되겠져? ^^

 차세대 라디오 방송이나 빨리 실현되었으면 좋겠군요. 운전하면서 가끔가다 라디오에서 나오는 노래가 어떤 곡인지 궁금할때 (mp3 구매 또는 다운도 되면 금상첨화 겠죠?) 교통정보나 날씨정보 같은거 듣고 싶은데 어느 방송국에서 나오는지 몰라 이리저리 찾을때....정말 필요하단 생각이 들던데 쩝.

<美MS, 최신정보 뜨는 손목시계 올 가을 출시>


    (워싱턴=연합뉴스) 마이크로소프트(MS)가 FM 라디오 주파수를 이용해 실시간으로 최신 뉴스와 교통상황 등을 전달하는 무선정보 서비스 시장에 진출한다.

    MS는 페이저와 개인휴대용 단말기(PDA) 및 휴대폰 등이 선점한  무선정보시장을 첨단 손목시계로 공략할 계획이다.

    MS는 `내셔널 세미컨덕터 코퍼레이션'(NSC)과 이미 3년전에 관련 장치와 핵심기술 연구에 착수, 저용량.저비용 칩을 개발해왔다.

    MS는 손목시계에 소형액정화면(LCD)을 설치해 주가와 일기예보,교통상황 등  최신 정보를 한눈에 읽을 수 있도록 해 소비자들의 관심을 끌 예정이다.

    손목시계외에 열쇠고리나 자명종 시계,냉장고 등에도 이러한 장치가 들어갈  수 있을 것으로 MS는 보고 있다.

    이러한 장치는 MS의 `닷넷 컴퓨터 서버 기술'을 토대로 한 것인 만큼 "손가락끝으로 모든 정보를 얻도록 한다"는 빌 게이츠 회장의 구상과 맞아 떨어진다는 평가다.

    이 장치는 방송국에서 출력되는 FM 라디오 주파수를 이용해 운동경기 결과와 인근 식당의 메뉴,운세,상영중인 영화제목과 시간표,테러경보 등에  이르기까지  각종 생활관련 정보를 받을 수 있다.

    `포실'과 `순토' 등 제휴회사가 공급할 첨단 손목시계는 미 해군천문대의  초정밀 시계에 항상 시간이 맞춰진다고 MS는 설명했다.

    `기가 인포메이션 그룹'의 애널리스트 롭 엔덜은 "이 기술은 조금만 지나면  없이는 살 수 없도록 만들 것"이라고 말했다.

    그러나 MS로서는 휴대폰 등 각종 휴대용 기기에 푹 빠져 있는 소비자들의  눈을 어떻게 돌리느냐가 성패의 관건이 될 전망이다.

    또 첨단 손목시계 등 관련 장치에 필요한 정보를 제공해줄  회사들과도  계약을 해야 할 처지다.

    MS측은 이 손목시계가 올 가을 시판될 때쯤에는 100대  메트로폴리탄  지역에서 무선정보서비스에 들어갈 수 있을 것으로 보고 있다.

    전문가들은 MS가 이 손목시계에 월 100건 가량의 메시지를 전달하는 대가로 8∼10달러 가량 받을 것으로 예상하고 있다. 최소 150달러에 팔릴 이 손목시계는 3일마다 재충전해야 한다.

    MS의 생산책임자 크리스 슈나이더는 "이 장치에 들어가는 기술을 감안하면 그렇게 비싼 편은 아니다"고 말했다.

    애널리스트 엔덜은 이 장치의 제조원가가 갈수록 싸져 놀이공원 등에서  입장권을 사면 사은품으로 제공될 날이 올 것이라고 내다봤다.

MICROSOFT is using a twist on some old technology - FM radio waves - to deliver instant messages, headlines and traffic updates to a new generation of gadgets that will fit on consumers' wrists or keychains.

The software company has big spending plans for its latest family of products, expected to go on sale in months, and some technology experts who have seen early prototypes are impressed. But Microsoft enters a wireless market crowded with pagers, handheld computers and cellular phones, and it still is signing contracts with companies that will provide information for the devices.

Microsoft envisions consumers using tiny liquid crystal display (LCD) screens on a high-tech watch, for example, to check for continually updated information at a glance, such as stock prices, weather forecasts or traffic tips "delivered in such a way that you only access the information when you care about it," said Chris Schneider, a Microsoft product manager.

Future versions of these devices - the company is still figuring out exactly how consumers might use them - might include keychains, alarm clocks or refrigerator magnets. The gadgetry, operating behind the scenes on Microsoft's ambitious .NET framework, fits squarely into chairman Bill Gates' mantra, "information at your fingertips".

"They could be all over the map," said Tim Bajarin, president of analyst firm Creative Strategies. "As individuals, when it comes to our digital lifestyle issues, there's no question that information at the time you need it is really important."

Using FM radio spectrum leased from some of the largest broadcasters, the gadgets could receive sports scores, local dining suggestions, horoscopes, theater listings or even terrorism alerts. Microsoft, which announced the devices this year, promises that watches from partners such as Fossil and Suunto could continually synchronize with super-accurate clocks operated by the US Naval Observatory.

"It's one of those technologies that could quickly become something you couldn't live without," said Rob Enderle, an analyst at Giga Information Group Inc. "It could become one of those things - once it saved you a couple times - that's hard to leave behind."

But Microsoft faces an uphill battle among some consumers, already drowning in an array of handhelds and cellular phones that can receive personalized information.

By the time devices go on sale in the fall, Mr Schneider said, Microsoft expects to be able to transmit to the new gadgets in the 100 largest metropolitan areas. Experts expect Microsoft to charge $US8 or $US10 per month for about 100 messages, plus the cost of the devices. Watches, which would need to be recharged about every three days, would cost $US150 and up but other devices could be far cheaper.

"It's not terribly expensive to put the technology into the devices," said product manager Schneider. Microsoft's research unit, which began work on the devices and underlying technology three years ago, teamed with National Semiconductor to develop the low-power, low-cost chips required.

Analyst Mr Enderle said the devices can be manufactured so cheaply that he imagines amusement parks eventually giving them away with the price of admission; those devices could keep track of lines at thrill rides, special offers at restaurants or even the time that a children's character might appear for autographs.

"It's inexpensive enough that it could be a technology that's widely adoptable and subsidised," Mr Enderle said.
