AIPEI, Taiwan -- IBM Microelectronics has agreed to outsource some of its PowerPC processor production to Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. because of inadequate yields at Singapore foundry Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Pte. Ltd., according to a DigiTimes report, Tuesday (May 20, 2003).

Even though IBM Microelectronics is a foundry itself, offering to make chips for other companies, it has reportedly reached a preliminary agreement by which Samsung would produce PowerPC microprocessors on its 0.18-micron manufacturing process technology. IBM has already sent engineers to Samsung's 8-inch fab to evaluate its manufacturing facilities, the report said.

IBM recently linked up with Chartered on future manufacturing process technologies (see November 26 2002 story)., but the Singaporean foundry has failed to meet expectations in current manufacturing quality, particularly yield rate, according to the report quoting un-named sources. The report said IBM's move to work with Samsung is a consequence of this.

IBM Microelectronics scored about $2.8 billion in semiconductor sales revenue in 2002 and about $700 million in foundry work, according to market researchers.
