1. SCIENCE NEWS
===========================================================================
-Motor Neurons From Embryonic Stem Cells
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=5900033&u=107092140
Manufacturing motor nerve cells may someday be possible to help
restore function in victims of spinal cord injury or such diseases
of motion as Parkinson's and Lou Gehrig's disease.
-Genes From 3 Organisms Create Microbial Factory
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=5900034&u=107092140
By combining genes from three separate organisms into a single
bacterial factory, chemical engineers have developed a simpler,
less expensive way to make an antimalaria "miracle" drug that is
urgently needed in Third World countries.
-Cloning Embryos from Cancer Cells
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=5900035&u=107092140
Nuclei removed from mouse brain tumor cells and transplanted into
mouse eggs whose own nuclei have been removed, give rise to cloned
embryos with normal tissues, even though the mutations causing the
cancer are still present.
-Transcription Factor Assists in Wound Healing
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=5900036&u=107092140
Biologists have determined that a protein essential for the
normal embryonic development of fruit flies is also used by mammals
to assist in the timely healing of cuts and lacerations.
-New RNAi Knockdown Technology Developed
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=5900037&u=107092140
Scientists have developed a valuable new experimental system for
tissue-specific RNAi knockdown in mammalian cells and organisms.
-HIV Escape Route from Drugs and Vaccines
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=5900038&u=107092140
Virologists may have discovered a new way by which HIV, the AIDS
virus, can evade both anti-viral drugs and vaccines.
FEATURED MOLECULE: Green Fluorescent Protein
http://www.bio.com/jump.jhtml?id=5900039&u=107092140
The jellyfish contains a bioluminescent protein-- aequorin --
that emits blue light. The green fluorescent protein converts this
light to green light, which is what we actually see when the
jellyfish lights up. GFP is amazingly useful in scientific
research, because it allows us to look directly into the inner
workings of cells.
