U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio), CWRU President Edward M. Hundert and Cleveland Mayor Jane L. Campbell
CLEVELAND—Citing the "awe inspiring" bravery of law enforcement officers and the outreach of the Cleveland and University communities, Case Western Reserve University President Edward M. Hundert expressed "incredible relief" that about 60 faculty, staff and students were safely evacuated from the Peter B. Lewis Building and reunited with their families.

A man with an automatic weapon entered the building for little more than six hours, starting at about 4 p.m. EDT Friday. About 60 people were evacuated safely over the course of the incident.
"We are incredibly saddened that this kind of thing should happen in any setting," the president continued. "A university should be a place where people come to grow and try to become themselves more fully and serve in the community and learn. This kind of incident is antithetical to the kind of experiences that we would hope would happen on our nation's University campuses."
"At the same time I can't tell you how proud I am of faculty, staff and students who have come together over these past seven hours," Hundert added. "And the support that has been shown by every sector of this community, it has been incredible."
Hundert, a psychiatrist, spent most of those seven hours with family members of CWRU students and employees who were still inside the Lewis building.
"We will continue to offer a support system . . . as long as that support is needed," he said.
Hundert was joined throughout the evening by Cleveland Mayor Jane L. Campbell and U.S. Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio).
He also expressed gratitude for the help and support of Campbell, Tubbs Jones and area law enforcement officers, including Cleveland police and SWAT teams from Cleveland, Euclid, the FBI and the Cuyahoga County sheriff's office, EMT and other medical personnel.
Counseling services will be available throughout the weekend.
