PERTH, Australia (CNN) -- Woodside Petroleum said its Australia LNG affiliate has signed a deal to supply liquefied natural gas to South Korea.

Australia LNG, the marketing arm of the North West Shelf venture, will provide 220,000 tons of gas to Korea Gas Corp, or Kogas.

"This is a significant step in developing our relationship with Kogas and we hope this will foster further long term LNG business with Korea," Australia LNG President Arthur Dixon said in a release.

Woodside Petroleum is the project operator of the North West Shelf project, which is the largest natural-resources development in Australia.

Expanding sales in Asia
The shelf is owned equally by six partners: Woodside; BHP Billiton; BP; Chevron; Japan Australia LNG, a joint venture of Mitsui and Mitsubishi; and Shell.

The North West Shelf has been aggressively targeting sales in Asia. In August, the project won Australia's largest export deal on record, a 25-year, $13.5 billion project to supply liquefied natural gas, or LNG, to China's Guangdong province. (Full story)

In the Korean deal, the gas will be shipped to Korea on the project's own ships and via a chartered boat, the British Trader, using an extra shipment and the overflow from existing customers' contracts.

Perth-based Woodside's shares closed up 0.86 percent at A$11.76 on Tuesday. But BHP Billiton closed down 1.14 percent at A$9.52, on a day Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index lost 0.33 percent.
