Samsung samples 2Gbit flash using 90nm processing

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. on Monday said that it had begun sampling a 2Gbit NAND flash memory chip made using 90nm processing, with pilot production in an existing development fab.
The Korean firm said mass production of the highest density flash will begin in the second half of next year when the Line 12 300mm wafer fab becomes operational with the 90nm process.
Chang Gyu Hwang, president of Samsung Electronics Memory division, said the 90nm node will also be used to produce 512Mbit and 1Gbit DRAMs. Samsung claimed it had already used 90nm processing to produce a test 512-Mbit DDR400 chip.
The process will also be used to make existing 256Mbit and 512Mbit DRAMs, with an expected 60% cost savings, the firm said.
Hwang said 90nm will allow Samsung to shift its focus increasingly from PC main memory to mobile and consumer electronics markets. "Demand for memory is expanding beyond the traditional PC platform to next-generation mobile devices, gaming products, digital TV and networking systems which require higher performance memory. Samsung is devoting more resources to develop memory solutions for tomorrow's communication devices and digital appliances," he added.
The 2Gbit NAND flash came shortly after Samsung introduced a 1Gbit NAND chip this summer. The 2Gbit chip can be placed in a Quad Die multichip package for a 8-Gbit device. It can be set in a 4Gbyte flash memory card capable of storing data of 70 CDs or 40 minutes of DVD video data, the firm asserted. Samsung saidwith this density the NAND flash memory is a potential replacement for small-capacity hard disk drives for camcorders and digital audio players.
