Computer scientist's salary is about avarge among all engineers and scientists.
Chemical engineers in Tobacco or Oil company or biochemists in drug company
get paid much higher than programmers or computer scientists.
But the catch is that it is VERY hard to get such jobs for chemical engineers
or bio chemists. But it is relatively easy for programmers to get a job.

Therefore, practically speaking, IT engineers are getting the best benefits.
Physics or Chemistry PhDs often fail to get a job even if they graduated
top schools and become unemployed.  I have seen many Physics, Math or
Cheistry PhD go back to graduate school and study computer science to become
a programmer although it is a very recent phenomenon.
I do not know if this is good for USA or not but I know it is
very good to have this flexibility. And in Korea, we do not have much
flexibility of this kind.
